Musashino: Sushi Etiquette

Sushi Etiquette
Comparing Tuna

Sushi etiquette is very important especially when one is with a Japanese guest or host. Poor etiquette is considered rude to the Japanese. Here are some tips for eating sushi:
  • Eat sushi in one bite or mouthful to enjoy the full flavor of the fish. Cutting or biting sushi in half will lift the fish off the rice, which is called "nare" (no air between rice and fish) and will not make the sushi as flavorful.
  • To avoid sushi breakage, first tip the piece of sushi sideways and then lightly dip it in the soy sauce. Put sushi in your mouth upside down.
  • It is best to eat sushi with your hands.
  • It is best to keep the wasabi and soy sauce separate.
  • Using your fingers or chopsticks, apply the wasabi straight on the fish.
  • Try not to rub the chopsticks together. If you need to start a fire just ask your server for some matches.
  • Wasabi is the green horseradish that is spicy. Do not let anyone convince you it is guacamole.
  • Gari is pickled ginger, eaten between different types of fish to clear your palette.
  • To enjoy the full flavor of tuna, do not use any citrus.
